Forest MIU AREA Spoon Rotation System

Forest MIU AREA Spoon Rotation System

AREA trout fishing is Japan’s refined stillwater style, developed for pressured waters.
This same rotation system applies effectively to urban trout fisheries and natural streams.

Where to Start (example weights and colors)

Begin with the Forest MIU AREA 2.8g spoon in a low-numbered color, then adjust color number and weight based on trout response.

Cast out past where the trout are. Use a steady retrieve, about 1 turn per second.

This assumes trout are feeding or willing to chase.

Presentation Adjustments Based on Trout Behavior

If trout show no interest at all, increase presence by moving up in weight (more silhouette and vibration) or selecting a lower-numbered color (stronger flash and a more assertive tone), helping reluctant trout notice the spoon and become more engaged.

If trout chase but do not commit, reduce presence by moving down in weight (less silhouette and vibration) or selecting a higher-numbered color (softer flash and a more subtle tone), giving pressured trout a presentation they are more comfortable committing to.

Color Number Guide

  • Low-numbered colors = brighter, higher presence
  • Mid-numbered colors = natural, balanced presence
  • High-numbered colors = subtle, low presence

Choose both weight and color based on trout feedback, more presence when they aren’t reacting, more subtlety when they’re cautious

Quick Reference

  • 3.5g = more casting distance, wind handling, deeper water, faster retrieves, and strong performance in fast current.
  • 2.8g = A balanced starting point for most trout situations. Use this weight first to read trout behavior before adjusting up or down.
  • 2.2g = shallow water, slow retrieves, slower current, and pressured fish.

Note: Forest recommends using a snap with your spoons to maintain full action and maximum freedom of movement during the retrieve.

Just follow this easy system — the trout will tell you what to do next.

Fishing with ultralight spoons is some of the most fun you’ll ever have.

Once the rotation is understood, anglers can apply the same principles across different colors, weights, conditions, and AREA spoon models.

This system is designed to adapt to trout behavior wherever they are found.
